a.
Chairman’s
Report - Chairman,
Peter Bowbrick, reported that 2005/2006 had to be viewed as successful
for the reasons listed below.
i.
The Morden Hall apiary was clear of EFB and had been given a
clean bill of health after two visits by Alan Byham, our regional Bee
Inspector.
ii.
The two beekeeping courses had been well attended and had
resulted in 7 new
members
joining the association. The Sunday morning sessions were also well
attended which the chairman felt was heartening. It is proposed that
courses in the same format will be held in 2007.
iii
The five WBKA members who took the BBKA Basic Exam passed.
iv
The monthly meetings had continued throughout the year with
talks and
demonstrations ranging from preparation of exhibits for honey
shows to basic
Genetics.
v.
The Association has been active in presenting bees and beekeeping
to the public,
several
members giving talks to local clubs and organisations. The WBKA also had
a stand at the local three-day spring bank holiday fayre and at the NT
Apple Day. We have also provisioned and maintained an observation hive
at the Environmental Centre at the Windmill on Wimbledon Common.
vi.
At the National Honey Show WBKA retained the Douglas Cup thanks to the
efforts of Fred Howard.
vii.
WBKA membership increased this year to 33 full members, 6 associate and
1
Junior.
The Chairman would like to thank members for their hard work and
dedication
which has laid the foundations for the possibility of an even
better year in 2007.
b.
Treasurers
Report. John Masters
reported that the accounts had been audited and passed and all monies
had been paid into the Nationwide account. He explained that the Gift
Aid option had been taken up by most members and was a contributor to a
healthy bank balance.
c.
Secretary.
Phil
Barnes reported a busy year with new leases for the Morden Hall Park
apiary being negotiated with the National Trust, a process that is
ongoing. Increased
membership has also resulted in actions designed to streamline the
process so members get their Beecraft magazines as soon as possible. The
SBKA is also passing membership details through to the BBKA as soon as
practical. The secretary also explained that he hoped to disseminate
more information via email.
d.
SBKA
Rep. Another area where things are changing rapidly, the proposed
introduction of Risk Assessments for apiaries, is to be encouraged and
the WBKA committee is looking at the framework document already in use
by Reigate BKA and will formulate its own version before the start of
next season. SBKA has started a discussion with the idea of a central
fund held by SBKA with money from all divisions. The fund would then
loan money to divisions with large projects, interest on the loan would
be paid into the central fund and back to the divisions. This is still
under discussion with resistance to the idea from some divisions.
Divisions are also to be encouraged to promote the BBKA Basic
Examination. It was felt that if more members held a beekeeping
qualification the BBKA would be better placed to challenge third-party
insurance claims.
e.
Surrey
Show Rep –Jill
Tyndale reported another successful show and they didn’t run out of
honey, WBKA supplied 100 potlettes of honey courtesy of Fred Howard.
Jill did report that although they had enough stewards this year they
may require volunteers for 2007.
f.
Programme
Secretary – Norman
Chapman felt we had had a good year with very interesting speakers
including Maurice Field, Fred Howard, Peter Bashford and Graham Wilkin.
Speakers for next season are to be approached as soon as possible so a
plan for next year can be posted. The disease check evenings were a
little disappointing with few samples being submitted; Norman hopes that
with increased membership we will have a better result next year.
g.
Circulation
Secretary. Maggie
Greenleaf reported no problems and she had help from Charlotte
Winterborn, which was much appreciated.
h.
Newsletter
Editor/Librarian
–Charlotte Winterborn reported that, with her other
Commitments,
including producing most of the material for the beekeeping courses
earlier in the year, she had published a bi-monthly newsletter. She felt
that in view of the need to keep all members updated with IPM
information and other new trends, there was a need for a monthly issue
and was seeking a successor. As librarian she was in the process of
obtaining new books and teaching aids for next season.
i.
Apiary
Wardens. Phil
Barnes, Holne Chase warden, reported no major problems
and
advised that there were spaces if anyone was interested. Peter Bowbrick,
Morden Hall Park warden, report apiary now free of disease and
colonies had
increased from 7 to 20. The Sunday morning teaching groups were
well attended
and he felt that a move to provide Association hives should be
addressed before
the start of next season.
j.
Extractor
Manager. Fred Howard
reported revenue for hires at £53 so a good take-up. We still have one
extractor with a burnt-out motor, which could be replaced for £90, the
meeting approved the expenditure and Fred will action its replacement.
k.
Swarm
Secretary. Paul
Gardiner was caretaker for this post and provided swarms for any of our
members who required them, many from his own apiary. It should be
remembered that the WBKA swarm secretary’s area is the London Borough
of Merton.
l.
Visiting
Advisers – Norman
Chapman and Fred Howard – No visits had been requested in 2006, but
they wished to point out that their services were available to all
members free of charge, although multiple visits would incur a charge.
5.
Appointment of
Auditor – Max
Gladwyn – Proposed by the meeting but yet to be approached
