The
Wimbledon Division of the Surrey Beekeeper's Association is an
organisation of Beekeepers, which operates in the Merton area.Every year we organise beginners’ courses and a variety of
educational and social events for our members.
There
are three divisional apiaries in secluded places where members can keep
their bees, although many prefer to use their own gardens.New members and beginners are always welcome to attend:-
meetings
lectures
garden
parties
diagnostic
bee disease checks
They
may also demonstrate their skills by exhibiting high quality honey, mead,
beeswax and cakes at competitions and shows. Our season ends with our own Honey
Show in December, where members can exhibit their bee products and compete
for awards and prizes.
Interested
in Bees?
Keeping
bees is an absorbing hobby for all ages and a very old craft. Although
it is often considered as a mainly rural activity, townspeople also
practice this fascinating hobby with great success and most suburban
areas will produce enough forage to support a few colonies of bees.Bees were on the earth millions of years before man. In olden
times they were kept in straw hives called skeps. At
the end of each season the combs with honey were cut out of the skeps. Keeping
bees has changed a little; nowadays, modern beekeepers keep their bees
in wooden hives. There
are several kinds of hives but they can all be manipulated so that the
beekeeper can observe the bees and exercise a measure of control over
them.As
much as 200lbs of honey is sometimes obtained from one hive and even
this is a long way below the record. However to expect this kind of
yield is ambitious and depending on the district and weather, a good
average might be 30-40lbs per hive.
